History & Motorsport Heritage

The story starts at the 1989 Tokyo Motor Show, where Mitsubishi displayed a 2+2 grand tourer concept called the HSX alongside the related HSR research car. In Japan, the car was sold as the GTO. The car also lived a second life as the Dodge Stealth, built through the Diamond Star Motors joint venture between Chrysler and Mitsubishi — the same arrangement that had already produced the Eclipse twins. Apart from badges and minor trim differences, the Stealth R/T Twin-Turbo was mechanically identical to the 3000GT VR-4.

The Stealth's Japanese origin caused an unexpected labor dispute in 1991. Dodge announced the Stealth would pace that year's Indianapolis 500, and the UAW erupted in protest — no import had ever paced the race, and the union saw it as an insult to American manufacturing. Dodge backed down and substituted a pre-production Viper RT/10. Chrysler reportedly still liked how the Stealth had performed in testing, and it's remembered informally as the unofficial pace car for the 1991 Indy 500, even though it never took the green flag in that role.

On track, the car's résumé is thin. Mitsubishi's motorsport budget through the 1990s went almost entirely toward the Galant VR-4 and Lancer Evolution rally programs, which delivered four consecutive World Rally Championship manufacturer titles. The GTO got none of that attention. Its most visible competition outing came in the Super Taikyu series between 1994 and 1996, where a Puma-liveried GTO MR (Mitsubishi Racing spec) ran under N1 rules. In the US, a Dodge Stealth took a class win at the 1992 12 Hours of Sebring. Aerodynamics & Design Philosophy

Masaru Suzuki designed the car, carrying it from the 1989 HSX concept into production with the coupe's proportions largely intact. It was built as a three-door hatchback coupe with 2+2 seating, sold domestically as the GTO and everywhere else as the 3000GT.

The most technically ambitious part of the design wasn't visible at a glance. Mitsubishi fitted what was described at the time as the world's first mass-production system to actively and simultaneously control both front and rear aerodynamic lift. Above roughly 50 mph, a motorized venturi under-cover extended downward by 80mm while a rear spoiler increased its angle of attack by 14 degrees.
